Mommy Makeover Basics

A Mommy Makeover is a familiar term for a personalized combination of cosmetic procedures to restore and rejuvenate common effects of childbearing and aging on the face, breasts, and body. Pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding can all leave lasting – and often unwanted – effects on the body such as stretched abdominal muscles, sagging breasts, and loose excess skin. Through your consult with Dr. Stiller, you will be able to address unwanted changes of pregnancy and restore the appearance you desire by personalizing your experience.

Mommy Makeover Benefits

Is a Mommy Makeover Right for Me?

There is no exact procedure "formula" for a Mommy Makeover. During your consultation, Dr. Stiller will tailor the procedure to address each patient's specific goals and needs. If you have excess belly fat and lax skin around the abdominal, hip, or thigh area with loss of breast volume and shape, a Mommy Makeover may be right for you. This may a combination of multiple procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation or liposuction. To be a good candidate for any procedures, you must be fully recovered from childbirth before undergoing surgery. If you are considering breast surgery, it is recommended to wait a few months until you are done with breastfeeding to allow the breasts to return to a stable shape and size. Certain non-surgical treatments, such as injectables, may not be recommended if you are still breastfeeding.

Many patients wonder if having a Mommy Makeover stops you from having children in the future. Typically, it is best to wait for any surgical "lifting" procedures such as a tummy or breast lift until you are done having children. If body contouring is a part of your journey, it is best to be near the weight you are comfortable with. If you plan to lose more than 20 pounds, you should wait to have your tummy tuck, as the weight loss could cause additional lax skin. If you do become pregnant after your procedures, this is not a problem; however, you may want additional procedures down the road. As a mom, we know you usually put your family before yourself, but you deserve to take care of yourself too.

Mommy Makeover Procedure

Because pregnancy and childbirth have a significant impact on the breasts and body, Mommy Makeovers tend to include breast enhancement and body contouring surgery. Some of the most common procedures performed include some combination of liposuction, tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and/or labiaplasty. However, your own Mommy Makeover may include other procedures that will best suit your own goals. For some patients, non-surgical injectables for the face, like neuromodulators and dermal fillers, can be performed as well to better enhance your confidence.

Many Mommy Makeover procedures include multiple procedures depending on your own goals whether that is two, three, or four procedures. In most cases, multiple procedures can be performed in a single operation. This allows improvement in multiple areas and one recovery period. Below are some procedures you can combine to tailor the procedure to you.

Liposuction

Dr. Stiller uses the tumescent technique, where a saline solution containing a local anesthetic is injected into the targeted fat cells before liposuction to numb the area, loosen fatty tissue, and minimize bruising. Small incisions (usually around ¼ inch) are made in the areas being treated. Dr. Stiller attempts to place the incisions in areas that are not noticeable. For example, natural body creases, the belly button, pubic area, or under the chin. A tube called a cannula, connected to a suction device, is then inserted to suction out the fat and liquid. After Dr. Stiller feels the area is properly contoured and defined, bandages are put in place for natural healing. The incisions are often left open to help excess fluid drain.

Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation procedure can be performed through the armpit, inframammary fold or areola. Depending on if you chose silicone or saline, the incision size will vary from 3cm-5cm. Once the pocket is created, either above or below the muscle, the implant is ready to be placed. Dr. Stiller uses a device called a Keller Funnel, which works similarly to a pastry bag used in baking. The implant is placed in the bag, and the tip of the bag is inserted into the incision. As the bag is squeezed, the implant moves into the pocket without anyone having to the touch the implant.

Breast Lift

A breast lift procedure entails Dr. Stiller lifting and reshaping the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. Most commonly, the nipples and areolas are repositioned and the areolas are made smaller in order to match the new breast position. The first type of breast lift is an anchor breast lift which includes an incision around the areola, a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision across the breast crease. This pattern is usually necessary for women who need a significant breast lift. The next is a "lollipop", or circumvertical breast lift, that includes an incision around the areola and a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease. There is no horizontal incision under the crease. This is possible only for women who need a moderate breast lift. The last is called a benelli, or peri-areaolar, breast lift which requires an incision around the areola only. This technique is only possible for women who have very mild sagging.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction is similar to that of a breast lift, as the breasts are both lifted and reshaped, however excess glandular tissue is removed, reducing the breasts down to the desired size. While incisions may vary, the most common incision used is an anchor pattern. This includes an incision around the areola, a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision across the breast crease. In some cases, a "lollipop" pattern may be used leaving you free from a horizontal incision. The nipples and areolas are repositioned and the areolas are made smaller in order to match the new breast size and position.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck procedure begins with Dr. Stiller performing liposuction to help contour and removing excess fat. This is done by inserting a small tube called a cannula, which is attached to a suction device. Dr. Stiller will then make a horizontal incision from one hip to the other to remove excess skin and tighten.  If you are undergoing a mini tummy tuck, the incision is much shorter. The incision is usually placed just above the pubic area to be easily be hidden by swimsuits and underwear. Another incision is placed around the belly button to free it from overlying tissue.

If necessary, the stomach muscles are also tightened along the midline to repair any muscle separation. This is done by suturing the fascia and removing the extra tissue.  The belly button is repositioned to the correct position by creating a new opening in the skin. Once this is complete, Dr. Stiller pulls down the outer skin over the abdomen, trims away the excess tissue and sutures the incisions closed.

Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora (inner labia). In some instances, patients with large labia experience pain during intercourse, feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Dr. Stiller performs the Wedge Resection technique when performing the labiaplasty procedure. This involves the removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together. Correcting the inner labia is a simple and reliable procedure that can create a more natural appearance and give you more confidence.

BBL

A Brazilian Butt lift, also known as BBL, is a cosmetic procedure to create a more prominent, enhanced buttock. Fat is harvested from other areas of your body and injected into your buttock to create a fuller, more rounded look. In addition to enhancing the buttock, other areas such as the abdomen, flanks and thighs are improved during the fat grafting process.
