Gynecomastia Basics

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breasts, usually cause by either genetics or medications. It is quite common in men, estimated to affect up to 50% of men in the U.S. during their lifetime. Male breast reduction is the most effective treatment for gynecomastia and can be performed safely and successfully on men of all ages.

Benefits of a Gynecomastia

Is Gynecomastia Surgery Right for Me?

Although losing weight can in some cases help to reduce gynecomastia in some men, oftentimes there is also excess glandular tissue in the area as well. This can cause even very lean patients to have enlarged breasts. Male breast reduction is the most consistently effective and permanent solution for treatment of gynecomastia. If you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your chest or are uncomfortable going shirtless due to your enlarged breasts, gynecomastia surgery may be the right choice for you.

Gynecomastia Procedure

There are two main techniques for gynecomastia surgery. One involves using liposuction only to remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue while sculpting your new chest contour. Liposuction is performed through small incisions made on each side of the chest, resulting in minimal scarring. For more severe cases of gynecomastia, surgical excision may be necessary, as well as tightening of the skin if there is stretched, sagging skin around the breasts. For surgical excision, Dr. Stiller will make incisions around the edge of the areola or within the natural creases of the chest and remove the fat and glandular tissue from the chest. Dr. Stiller will assess your gynecomastia during your consultation and will help you choose which technique is best for you and your body goals.

For your Cosmetic Surgery, cash pay procedures, your surgery will be performed at our own on-site AAAASF accredited surgery center at our Stiller Aesthetics office. Our operating room is fully equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

Recovery

Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure, so after a short period of recovery time, you will go home the same day. Recovery after gynecomastia surgery can vary between patients however, most patients recover very well. When you wake up from surgery, you will be in a compression garment which we advise to wear the first 2 weeks all the time followed by 2 more weeks during times of activity. You can expect bruising, swelling and a feeling of tightness for about 2-3 weeks.

You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions upon completion of your procedure. If at any time you should have any questions or concerns after surgery, please contact our practice immediately.

Results

Results from gynecomastia surgery are immediate and permanent, as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid significant weight gain or steroid use. Some medical conditions may also result in a recurrence of gynecomastia, so it is important to discuss these factors with Dr. Stiller so you are well-informed and can ensure your results are permanent. You will instantly notice a flatter, more masculine chest following your procedure, giving you a boost of self-confidence in your body.
