Breast Augmentation Basics

Breast augmentation is a procedure performed to increase the breast size and enhance the overall breast shape. This is usually accomplished through the use of breast implants, whether that is silicone or saline implants. With the surgical placement of implants, the breast shape can  enhance in size and shape, adding fullness and volume. If you are looking to enhance the shape of your breasts, a breast augmentation may be right for you. In your consultation with Dr. Stiller, he will walk you through the procedure, your options for breast implants, and what kind of results you can expect from your procedure.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

If you feel that your breasts lack the volume and shape that would make you feel most confident, a breast augmentation may be right for you. Breast augmentation is different from other breast procedures, such as a breast lift, in that the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts are the primary areas of focus. While a breast implant can make breasts appear larger, it does not on its own move them higher up on the body for a lifted appearance. Other procedures such as breast lifts can be done at the same time as a breast augmentation to combine the beneficial results of both procedures and reduce downtime. Patients may also choose fat grafting to augment their breasts instead of implants. This is a great choice for many patients however, there is the risk of fluctuation of volume depending on weight loss or weight gain.

Augmentation with Implants

Breast augmentation with implants is a great option for patients who would like a more permanent outcome compared to fat grating. While all implants come in a silicone shell, there are two choices when it comes to what's inside. Breast implants are either filled with silicone, a gel-like substance, or saline, what 70% of your body is already made of. The decision may feel difficult however, below are some of the major differences between the two.

Silicone

Saline

During your consultation with Dr. Stiller, you will be able to try on different implants. You will be able to visualize going up and down in size as well as the different shapes available, moderate, high profile and ultra-high profile. By allowing the option of trying on implants, you will be able to visualize what looks good on your body and gives you the most confidence.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

For your breast augmentation procedure, there are a few different incision options available to choose from. All are designed to keep the scarring very minimal and easily hidden. Dr. Stiller will be able to review your options with you during your consultation to choose what is best for your breast shape, but some of the incision types he uses include:

After the incision is made and the pocket is created, either above or below the muscle, the implant is ready to be placed. Dr. Stiller uses a device called a Keller Funnel, which works similarly to a pastry bag used in baking. The implant is placed in the bag, and the tip of the bag is inserted into the incision. As the bag is squeezed, the implant moves into the pocket without anyone having to the touch the implant.

Augmentation with Fat Grafting

Patients who do not desire implants may opt for fat grafting of the breast which involves liposuction of another area of the body and redistributing the fat to the breasts. This can help achieve a more natural look compared to that of implants for both look and feel. However, if you desire a much larger increase of size to your breasts, fat grafting may not be right for you. Most commonly, Dr. Stiller can achieve one or two cup size increase with fat grafting. It is also important to take into consideration that if you commonly fluctuate with your weight, your breast size may also fluctuate after fat grating. Nonetheless, fat grafting to the breast is a great option for many patients desiring a more natural feminine silhouette.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

The recovery for breast augmentation varies from patient to patient, however, most patients do very well. Breast augmentation with implants or fat grafting takes no more than 1 hour and you will leave the that same day. After surgery, your incisions will be dressed and you will be placed in a compression bra that you will leave on until your 1 week post op. It is normal to feel swollen and for the implants to feel hard and sitting high on your chest. Most commonly, patients can return to work after 5-7 days. It can take up to 3 months to see the final result of your breast augmentation.

You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions upon completion of your procedure. If at any time you should have any questions or concerns after surgery, please contact our practice immediately.
