Labiaplasty, or Aesthetic Vaginal surgery, is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora (inner labia). Some patients are born with an enlarged labia minora, while it can also occur from childbirth and aging. In some instances, patients with large labia experience pain during intercourse, feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. The purpose of a Labiaplasty is to better define the inner labia and cosmetically rejuvenate the female external genitalia.
If you are a cis-gendered female, trans female, or non-binary individual who experiences physical or emotion pain from having unwanted, enlarged portions of the internal labia, then a Labiaplasty may be the right choice for you. Some patients are born with an enlarged labia, although it can also occur from childbirth and aging. This can cause asymmetry of the inner labia and discomfort during sexual intercourse or wearing tight clothes.
During this procedure, it is also common for patients to augment the labia majora (outer labia) with fat grafting to either reduce or enlarge the size. Another aspect of a Labiaplasty is a Clitoral Hood Reduction, in which Dr. Stiller can remove a small amount of tissue to have the clitoris more accessible. During your consultation with Dr. Stiller, you will have the time to go over your concerns and goals to achieve the best results for you.
Dr. Stiller performs the Wedge Resection technique when performing the Labiaplasty procedure. This involves removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together. In Dr. Stiller's opinion, this technique allows for the best aesthetic result and is the most valuable technique. The Wedge Resection technique can also allow for tightening at the opening of the vagina and easily hide scars. Correcting the inner labia is a simple and reliable procedure that can create a more natural appearance and give you more confidence.
Recovery after a Labiaplasty procedure can vary between patients. You will be given a pain regimen to help manage your pain and get you through recovery as easy as possible.
A Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, so after a short period of recovery time, you will go home the same day. You will need a person 18 years or older with you the day of surgery.
After surgery, you can expect bruising and swelling for about 2-4 weeks. At that time, it is usually when patients can return to normal activity. Most commonly, it can take 6-8 weeks to return to sexual intercourse. Most patients take about 1 week off of work, some may take longer or return sooner depending on the physical demands of their job.
After a Labiaplasty, most patients notice a significant difference right away and continued improvement as swelling continues to go down. It is almost impossible to notice any scarring after a Labiaplasty as the scar blends in well with the labia minora tissue which naturally has multiple wrinkles and folds. With aging and childbirth, there is always a possibility to get labia hypertrophy again; however, most commonly it has lasting results.
