What is a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora (inner labia). Some patients are born with an enlarged labia minora, while it can also occur from childbirth and aging. In some instances, patients with large labia experience pain during intercourse, feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. The purpose of a labiaplasty is to better define the inner labia and cosmetically rejuvenate the female external genitalia.

What are the benefits of a Labiaplasty?

Is a Labiaplasty Right for Me?

If you are a cis-gendered female, trans female, or non-binary individual who experiences physical or emotion pain from having unwanted, enlarged portions of the internal labia, then a labiaplasty may be the right choice for you. Some patients are born with an enlarged labia however, asymmetrical inner labia can also occur from childbirth or aging. Transgender females may need a labiaplasty for correction purposes after a vaginoplasty. The asymmetry of the inner labia can cause discomfort during sexual intercourse or even wearing tight clothes.

During this procedure, it is also common for patients to augment the labia majora (outer labia) with fat grafting to enlarge the size as the outer labia can atrophy with age. Another aspect of a labiaplasty is a clitoral hood reduction, in which Dr. Stiller can remove a small amount of tissue to have the clitoris more accessible. During your consultation with Dr. Stiller, you will have the time to go over your concerns and goals to achieve the best results for you.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Dr. Stiller performs the Wedge Resection technique when performing the labiaplasty procedure. This involves removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together. In Dr. Stiller's opinion, this technique allows for the best aesthetic result and is the most valuable technique. The Wedge Resection technique can also allow for tightening at the opening of the vagina and easily hide scars. Correcting the inner labia is a simple and reliable procedure that can create a more natural appearance and give you more confidence.

Recovery

A Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, so after a short period of recovery time, you will go home the same day. Recovery after a labiaplasty varies on the patient however, most patients do very well. After surgery, you can expect bruising and swelling for about 2-4 weeks. However, patients usually return to normal daily activities within a few days. Most commonly, it can take 6 weeks to return to sexual intercourse. Most patients take about 1 week off of work, some may take longer or return sooner depending on the physical demands of their job.

You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions upon completion of your procedure. If at any time you should have any questions or concerns after surgery, please contact our practice immediately.

Results

After a labiaplasty, patients notice a significant difference right away and continued improvement as swelling continues to go down. It is almost impossible to notice any scarring after a labiaplasty as the scar blends in well with the labia minora tissue which naturally has multiple wrinkles and folds. With aging and childbirth, there is always a possibility to get labia hypertrophy again; however, most commonly it has lasting results.
