Eyelid Surgery Basics

Designed to effectively treat tired-looking eyes, eyelid lift surgery helps rejuvenate the eyes and restore a youthful, fresh-faced appearance to aging eyes. Eyelid lift surgery helps to smooth wrinkles, tighten sagging skin, and reduce puffiness around the eyes.

Is an Eyelid Lift Right for Me?

Do you feel your eyes have aged and have a tired, sad, or angry appearance? Are you sometimes mistaken as being upset or unhappy, even when you’re feeling great? Are sagging eyelids obstructing your ability to see? If any of these are true for you, an eyelid might be the right solution. Eyelid skin is very delicate and prone to sagging, wrinkles, loose skin, and other effects of aging. An eyelid lift is an effective way to surgically counteract these changes and rejuvenate the eyes to give a more bright-eyed and youthful appearance.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

There are a few options available for your eyelid lift, depending upon your specific concerns, anatomy, and goals for the procedure. Upper eyelid surgery may be recommended if your concerns include sagging, wrinkled skin on the upper eyelids. For this procedure, an incision is made in the upper eyelid crease, through which Dr. Stiller will remove excess skin and/or fat and adjust the surrounding muscle tissue to give your upper eyelid a lift. For those who want to remove puffy baggy skin beneath the eyes, a lower eyelid procedure is typically performed. In this type of procedure, Dr. Stiller makes an incision on the outer edge of the lower eyelid beneath the eyelashes and removes fatty tissue and extra skin to tighten the under eye.

Recovery

When you awake from your surgery, your head will be wrapped in a compression garment to prevent swelling, which we recommend you wear for around 2 weeks. There will be deep dissolvable stitches and the top stitches will be removed in 1 week along with the staples along the hairline. It is normal to experience bruising, swelling, and a feeling of tightness for about 2 weeks. Even so, many patients feel comfortable going out in public about a week or so after the procedure. You may also experience some burning and numbness in the face and along the incision lines which can last up to 3 months.

Results

Whether you decide on an upper eyelid lift, lower eyelid lift, or both, with a healthy lifestyle and good skincare habits you will be able to enjoy your refreshed and youthful look for years. To prolong the effects from your procedure, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen every day, don’t smoke, and practice good nutrition consistently. Aging is a natural and unavoidable fact of life that may affect your results eventually, but rest assured your results will age naturally with you and there are non-surgical treatments, such as Botox or filler, that can help keep your youthful look by smoothing wrinkles and fine lines around your face and eyes.
