Basics

Facial masculinization can involve surgical and non-surgical treatments to help create more chiseled and defined male facial features for transmen and non-binary individuals.  When we analyze the typical masculine face, it known to be broader with an emphasis on stronger facial features such as the chin, jaw and brow. Although hormone replacement therapy with testosterone can help many patients gain more angular and defined features, sometimes it's not enough. With the help of other modalities such as filler and chin implants, Dr. Stiller can help you best align your outer appearance with what you feel on the inside.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a quick and easy way to achieve a more masculine appearance to the jaw by sculpting and recontouring. The use of dermal filler to the chin and jaw will help create that sculpted appearance and help you better align with you gender identity. Dermal filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. The hyaluronic acid will help to add facial volume to create the stronger features you desire. The injection process for dermal fillers are quick and easy. The areas are cleaned, topical anesthetic can be applied if needed, and the injections are delivered leaving you with instant results. During your consultation, our team will discuss your specific aesthetic goals to best decide what type of filler is best for you.

Recovery

There is no lengthy recovery when it comes to dermal fillers. After your treatment, you may notice some redness, swelling and bruising to the treatment areas however this will resolve within a few days. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities right away. Results will be visible immediately however it can take 2 weeks to see the final result. Although dermal fillers are not permanent, they typically last 9-12 months. Additional injections can be done when you notice the results starting to fade.

Chin Implant

A chin implant is a great option for transmen and non-binary patients who desire lasting results. Sometimes, patients will first start with dermal filler to better visualize what the results may look like. This can be helpful to determine what your aesthetic goals are and gain confidence that a more permanent solution is desired. Chin implants are made of silicone and placed along the chin to help create a more defined jaw and chiseled chin. The implant is placed through a small incision under the chin allowing for a well-hidden scar. During your consultation with Dr. Stiller, you will be able to review the chin implants to best decide what is right for you.

Recovery

After a chin implant procedure, downtime is minimal and patients usually return to work within 5-7 days. There will be swelling and bruising to the area however,  the procedure is very tolerable and most patients do very well. You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions upon completion of your procedure. If at any time you should have any questions or concerns after surgery, please contact our practice immediately.
