What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the swelling of breast tissue in boys and men, caused by the imbalance of estrogen and testosterone hormones. During puberty, levels of these hormones may fluctuate and rise at different levels, resulting in a temporary state in which estrogen concentration is relatively high. Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.

How to Prepare for Your Gynecomastia Procedure

During your consultation, an explanation of preoperative and postoperative plan will be reviewed.

You will be given a list of medication to avoid taking two weeks prior to the operation. A Stiller staff member will contact you a few days before the surgery and notify you what time you are expected to arrive for your procedure and discuss any last minute details.

At this time, you will be given an opportunity to ask any further questions. Continuing a healthy diet and exercise is very important prior to surgery. Smoking must be stopped two weeks prior to surgery.

Surgery Day

Do not eat or drink eight hours before your surgery. You should wear a button-down or zipper front shirt and sneakers. Do not wear sandals or slippers.

You will meet with a member of our staff to prepare for surgery. Dr. Stiller will see you prior to your surgery to answer any final questions and meet family or friends. You will meet with our anesthesia provider to discuss anesthesia. For family or friends that accompany you, we have a lounge area to comfortably pass the time.

You will need someone to drive you home after the operation and stay with you the first 24 hours after the surgery is completed.

How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. This requires insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through several small incisions. Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced or the nipple will be repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference.

What is the Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery?

Following surgery, you will likely have drainage from your incisions. Any discomfort you feel should be controlled with oral pain medications prescribed by Dr. Stiller.

Depending on your job, you should be able to get back to work in a few days. Dr. Stiller will direct you regarding resuming exercise and normal activities during your follow-up evaluations.

The decision for a Gynecomastia Surgery is a very personal choice. The most important thing is how you feel. If your goals have been met, then your procedure was a success. However, it is very important to continue follow-ups as recommended by Dr. Stiller.
